Over the years, I’ve learned to become far more strategic and discerning when it comes to my Black Friday purchases. Working in an often shopping-centric job and being hyper-aware of sales means it can be tempting to go a little overboard with my own purchases (which inevitable leads to buyer’s remorse). So, this year, I made a conscious effort to only invest in classic pieces I’ve had my eye on for some time and I know are well-made.

One such example: the Matter Loafers by Scandinavian footwear brand Last, which I first spotted on a publicist friend at an event a few months ago. (Had my eye on for some time? Check.) When I saw that they were part of Shopbop’s Black Friday sale, I decided to officially add them to my footwear collection — and I’m already so glad I did.

They initially got me with their cute details: The contrast white stitching around the soles and zig-zag edge on the tongue lend a little more interest and personality than your typical pair of penny loafers. But the basic black leather shoes still remain classic and wearable, particularly since they feature a cushioned footbed that’s super comfortable. (Classic and well-made? Check and check.)

While boots tend to get all of the attention when it comes to winter footwear, I think these are a totally practical alternative (especially when worn with a cute pair of socks for extra ankle warmth). Yes, they’re leather, but they also feature a chunky rubber lug sole that conveniently hikes you up about an inch or so above any frosty slush puddles.
