At New York Fashion Week there’s just as much magic happening backstage as their is on the runway, from makeup artists’ swift brush strokes to the lingering smell of hairspray and the rush of last-minute touch-ups. The beauty details — be they corseted hair ribbons at Christian Siriano, pink bleached brows at Anna Sui or logo manicures at Helmut Lang — can truly make or break a runway moment.
Dewy, luminous skin prevailed across multiple runways, from Dion Lee’s hyper-futuristic metallic face to Ulla Johnson’s soft, shimmering glow (with golden lids to match). Helmut Lang’s graphic liner and 3.1 Phillip Lim’s painted-on eye shadow looks both incorporated bold pops of color, while Sandy Liang’s models could’ve stepped out of Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” with their fresh-faced flushes, blotted-out brows, rhinestone adornments and glossy lips (masterminded by Estée Lauder’s Jocelyn Biga).
As for hair trends, the Spring 2024 runways featured plenty of slicked-back up-dos — a New York Fashion Week favorite we spotted this season at Tory Burch, Khaite, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Sergio Hudson, among others. Mirror Palais embraced romantic, slightly-tousled hair to complement its dreamy collection, and even placed some models’ hair underneath ribbon chokers. Studio 189 and Dauphinette each showed statement braided looks that were works of art all by themselves.
On the hair accessory front, we couldn’t get enough of the cascading fabric flower barrettes featured on one of Jonathan Cohen’s models, Tibi’s skinny headbands — aka Y2K relics — and Bach Mai’s hair feathers.
This season’s must-have manicures manifested in red-hot polish from Proenza Schouler and Brandon Maxwell, Adeam’s bejeweled claws and Staud’s simple singular stripe.
