admin What Prada, especially in the Miuccia Prada/Raf Simons era, is known for are the clean lines it draws with its silhouettes — the boxy sleeveless dresses that cut straight down from shoulder to calf, the sharp pencil skirts that reach the ankle, the oversized coats that obfuscate the body underneath and impose their own shape onto the wearer. The brand will play with embellishments (like the white florals that covered the Fall 2023 collection), but in a way that’s calculated and restrained.
Spring 2024 maintains this ethos, but creates movement through added layers of softness, such as a gauzy fabric that runs almost like a film over these clean lines on dresses (and sweeps up in the air as the models walk, almost like a jellyfish in water) or a scarf wrapped around the shoulders of a boxy playsuit (in a signature triangle, mind you).
The sleeves on jumpsuits are slashed (not messily, but rather intentionally) so that the fabric can hang more freely around the forearm, the formfitting skirts are shortened and rendered in a lightweight translucent fabric that reveals the shadow of the legs underneath. (Though this is certainly not how Mrs. Prada and Simons intended for this show to be consumed, I do recommend watching the runway film at 2x speed. It’s fun to watch the clothes move.)
Fringe is a big element this season, done in two ways: one where it matches the color or pattern beneath to disappear against a garment except for when in motion, one where it pours out like tinsel from leather belts and creates an overlay over short-shorts. (Prada teased this flair in a series of black-and-white videos of a branded beaded curtain door posted to social media. Imagine if it actually sold that.)
There’s synergy between the brand and Mrs. Prada’s other creative brainchild, Miu Miu, in the distressed black leather and oversized chore jackets. (At Prada, the leather’s used across outerwear, dresses and skirts, and it’s embellished with grommets and crystal flowers.) Of course, a large reason for that synergy was, historically, also Fabio Zambernardi, a longtime design director for the Prada Group; he recently announced he was leaving the company, so Mrs. Prada and Simons brought him out for the final bow.
