Willy Chavarria is known for playing with proportions and expectations, incorporating social commentary into his work. As senior vice president of design at Calvin Klein, he also knows how to breathe new life into familiar, everyday silhouettes from iconic American brands — so, it makes sense that Dickies would tap the California-raised, New York-based creative as its latest collaborator. For Chavarria, it’s a full-circle moment.
“Dickies is a brand that I grew up with — I must’ve been around 12 or 13 when I bought my first pair of Dickies from Kmart,” the designer writes via e-mail. “It’s very special to get to design a collection for a brand that I have grown up wearing and admiring. To me, the most elegant look will always be a clean, pressed pair of Dickies pants worn with a crisp white T-shirt.”
Willy Chavarria x Dickie’s includes nine pieces, from structured work shirts to drop-crotch pants and tailored shorts. A specially-made label is prominently featured on the front of each garment. The hope is for the designs to convey an idea of “remastering utilitarian elements to have a more intentional design interpretation,” Chavarria says.
This project is “a great representation of how Dickies seeks to highlight our heritage, quality workwear products while also championing creative vision,” according to Ann Richardson, the brand’s director of merchandising. “We’re thrilled to work with a style icon like Willy Chavarria to create a collection that highlights our shared passions of authentic style and self expression.”
Chavarria updates familiar Dickies styles with new shapes (see: the batwing-shaped windbreaker), often playing with scale (as seen in a boxy work shirt with oversized front pockets and sleeves).
“My designs are intended to empower the wearer, and give people the confidence to embrace their individuality, and to respect and embrace others,” he explains. “When people come across Willy Chavarria, I want them to discover more than just clothes; I want them to discover a brand that serves as a catalyst for conversations and actions.”
