Time to Flip: Jackie O’s Signature Hair Comes to Street Style

If you’re in need of some beauty inspiration, the work of Vogue‘s photographers like Phil Oh (aka @mrstreetpeeper) and Hunter Abrams (@hunterabrams) are a great place to start. Their Fashion Month roster is stacked with traveling to the shows, where they go backstage, front-of-house, and the street style outside events. It’s fun to watch the different vibes each city has to offer (New York, London, and Milan are currently live) and clock what’s trending—and a popular look for Italian girls and those attending the Italian shows? Flipped out hair.

“This is a really classic ‘60s hair flip made popular by Jackie Kennedy and Mary Tyler Moore,” says celebrity hairstylist Irinel De León, after taking a look at our collected screen shots, which included Chiara Ferragni outside the Tod’s show. “It’s polished, but the flip adds a little fun.”

Personal shopper and stylist Bettina Looney agrees—she traded in her below the shoulders dark brunette hair for a bleached white bob with flipped out ends for the Moschino fortieth anniversary show (it was a wig, of course).

“This look so playful,” she shares. “My favorite hairstyle ever was when I chopped my hair into a short bob, there was something about how bouncy and clean cut it was, I felt a bit sexier and in charge! I think playing around with this wig for the Moschino show sold me on it again.”

What makes the look 2023 and not Stepford Wives is all in the preparation, De León says. “This look doesn’t have as much volume as it did in the ‘60s, that’s the modern twist.” Short hair with long layers and blunt ends is key to recreating the look. From there, “take small round brush to direct the ends of the hair in an upward motion. If that’s too difficult, you can always use a curling iron to flip the ends out and setting with hairspray. Once hair has cooled, brush through to sculpt into place.”
