I recently traveled to Peru on a press trip to learn about the country’s alpaca industry. (I got to savor plenty of regional foods and pisco sours along the way — and even visited a ranch to meet the adorable camelids themselves.) It turns out, it can get pretty chilly at 13,000 feet high in the Andes mountain range. Would a coat have been ideal? Yes, but admittedly, I didn’t pack too well for the occasion.
On a six-hour drive from Ariquepa, the country’s second most populated city, my surroundings went from a temperate valley to snow-capped peaks and icy air. Fortunately, I was saved from frosty catastrophe thanks to my quilted Moose Knuckles vest layered over a cashmere crewneck.
The vest is the real hero here. I appreciate how functional it is, on top of being ridiculously cozy. A detachable hood and various pockets (including an inside pouch) mean I can keep my hands warm while carrying whatever I need. The cinched waist is a nice change of pace from so many other baggy winter layers. Plus, I like using the double zipper feature the unzip for the lower quarter to create a peplum silhouette.
I would be remiss to not also mention how awesome the garment is for traveling in general: It kept me balmy during my flight (airplanes tend to get cold, especially on long-haul trips) and had all the right pockets to keep my phone, passport, wallet and headphones organized.
