The Supermodels’ Most Iconic Hairstyles in 21 Glorious Photos | Vogue

From Naomi’s glossy lengths to Linda’s scarlet crop, the supers have inspired their fair share of hair trends over the years—and on Vogue’s September 2023 cover, their unique and distinctive styles are borne out in each of their different hair looks. “Hair plays an important role in creating iconic moments like this,” says Shani Lechan, founder of Shani Wigs, who created Campbell’s wig for the shoot. “It has the power to tell a story.”

As is the case for regular mortals, the supermodels’ hairstyles reflect their individual personalities. While each of their styles has evolved over the course of their time in the industry, their essence still remains the same as back in the ’90s, when they made their names. Back in the day, Cindy was all about a glamorous blow-out with megawatt volume, but today she errs on the beachy side—which makes sense given that she lives in Malibu.

Christy’s mid-length hair—so often seen pulled up into an elegant chignon or worn glossy and straight in the ’90s—was tonged into disco curls for the cover (courtesy of hairstylist Eugene Souleiman). Linda’s electric-blonde bob, complete with side-sweeping fringe, is a close relative of her head-turning graphic cuts of old, still referenced so frequently at fashion shows and in salons today.

Naomi’s luxurious mane, meanwhile, is shinier than it’s ever been. “When I was creating the wig for this shoot, I pulled inspiration from the early years of Naomi’s career,” explains Shani. “I was drawn to a long, silky look, reminiscent of her defining era. The fact that it worked so well in the shoot is a testament to how timeless and classic she is. It works so well on her.” Paying special attention to the hairline to customize the look perfectly for Campbell, Shani skilfully used a needle to add baby hairs, one by one, to mimic a wispy, barely detectable hairline.

Here, Vogue takes a look back at some of the supers’ hair moments that have made history.
