Editors’ Picks are the Fashionista team’s true (#notspon) fashion and beauty obsessions, handpicked by professionals who see it all.
There’s this common sacrifice I just laughed about with friends over the weekend (through chattering teeth): In the winter, there’s always a choice between being warm or stylish — rarely do you get both. I’ve been trying to focus on collecting those hard-to-come-by pieces that don’t force me to pick.
That’s what drew me to Luar’s take on a tech jacket. I tried it on in-store, and everything about it was just… well, cool. I ultimately came to a fiscally fuzzy, sartorially sound decision and bought it. My favorite thing about it is simply how funky it makes me look, thanks to the exaggerated shoulder pads. I’m in the process of phasing out of a minimalist-forward wardrobe brought on by the pandemic, and having more fun with both color and proportion. The way it alters my shape is almost cartoonish, which is all part of Raul Lopez’s genius.
While it’s obviously not a heavy-duty winter coat, it’s still cozy enough on colder days. The wide neck creates a comfortable spot for me to cocoon, to either appear mysterious or shield my face from a brutal gust of wind. It has multiple very deep pockets (something I struggle to find in women’s clothing), and the mixed fabrics give it that gorpcore vibe. You know what’s even more fabulous? The sleeves are detachable, so this works for all seasons. (When I’m feeling particularly gutsy, I take the sleeves off and pair this with some leather opera gloves.)
Luar may be most known for the viral Ana bag, but I fell in love hard with the clothes after last season’s show. There are more affordable tops as well, including a spiffy logo pullover, but I had to add this to my wardrobe as a statement piece for years to come.
