You can’t deny the cozy allure of joggers and black leggings, but how about a happy medium? Our editors have found theirs in the most comfortable jeans—a pant that’s both practical and polished. And because fashion editors are notorious for having large denim collections, we asked a handful of our stylish colleagues to share their favorite ones. More specifically, the most comfortable jeans in their wardrobes.
Vogue Editors’ Most Comfortable Jeans:
Denim’s proven itself to be a tried-and-true wardrobe essential for a reason, with purists on the team gravitating toward non-stretch denim. As far as fabric goes, if rigid denim isn’t your speed, there are plenty of other options in this gallery cut from softer and thinner denim that don’t cross into stretch territory. (In fact, jeans have become so comfortable that denim has entered a whole new category; more on those non-jean jeans here.)
But besides sharing their most comfortable pairs, editors also revealed a few styling tips and tricks, like knowing when to size up or down, which styles don’t require breaking in, and which denim trends are the hottest right now. Thanks to these picks, the search for the perfect denim to wear just about anywhere can end here. You just have to know where to find them—which hopefully for you, is below.

I am so happy that relaxed-fit jeans are trending right now; the slouchier, the better for me. This pair of Raey jeans comes in multiple shades, including a soft black and perfect mid-blue wash. They look great with something slim fitting on top, and either sneakers or a kitten heel… depending on just how comfy you want to be.

I was on the hunt for a great pair of baggy, lower-rise jeans to add a new jean silhouette to my collection. I have not taken off Agolde’s newer “low-slung baggy” pair since I got them over the holidays in two different washes. They’re offered in two inseam lengths. I opted for the longer version to achieve that ultra-casual cool puddle draping effect over my shoes. I love the relaxed ease these bring to my style, not to mention they’re the most comfortable pair I’ve tried yet.

I’m a big fan of Mother Jeans. Given my petite size, the Insider Crop seamlessly fits my frame, and they’re so comfortable, they feel like a second skin. Even better, they come in a multitude of colors for all-year-round wear and I especially love the frayed hem detail to wear with boots or sneakers.

I find myself reaching for this pair of cropped 501s on the weekend more often than not. They hit in all the right places and are a straight cut that don’t hug the legs (they’re also not baggy). The best part is the “cropped” length for my average height.

I’m a weirdo who wears jeans almost every day, even if I am not going anywhere. I swear I even think better in them! My go-to is a pair of black Levi’s 501s, which at this point, feel like a second skin to me. Once you break them in, they are so comfortable—promise!

This has been my year of the jean—basically taking every jeans style for a spin to see what suits me. (In 2022, I didn’t own a pair as insane as that sounds!) When I want something tailored, I gravitate towards these Mango jeans. The balloon style feels a bit more interesting than your average jean, and fit roomier than a straight-leg.

My current favorite pair is a mid-rise, wide-leg, light-wash from Unspun. They use a 3D body scanning technology to create custom-fit jeans, so they’re super comfortable. Plus, they are dedicated to transparency about where their clothes are made, and prioritize low-waste manufacturing processes. It’s a cool company, and a super wearable pair of jeans.

In college I discovered a lot about myself—including which jeans worked for me. More than 10 years later, I’m still wearing basically the same exact pair of pants. Black, skinny-leg, very high-waist denim with a little stretch by Frame. When worn, I feel like Audrey Hepburn as a beatnik in Funny Face dancing in the cafés of Paris. Their extra-high waist means no fidgeting and retucking (blouses and, ahem, skin). Their slight stretch (2.5% of elastane which makes all the difference) allows me to crisscross my legs with ease. They look somewhat dressy and can almost pass as a no-denim pair of pants—which is perfect because I seem to be in the extreme minority of people who don’t wear blue jeans.

I recently invested in a few pairs of Levi’s for entering the new year, and I have to say that these straight-ankle jeans have been my go-tos. While I am a jeans girl through and through, I’m always on the lookout for pairs that are comfortable and flattering, yet can be dressed up or down—depending on the occasion. I’ve worn this pair to the office, out with friends, and even while working from home. Plus, the wider leg is perfect for pairing them with heeled black boots and a sweater if I’m feeling extra fancy.

I love these Acne jeans—maybe too much. More comfortable than sweatpants, they are perfect for a bodega run or a dinner downtown. Just a couple of weeks ago, I wore them on a 15-hour plane ride and unlike most denim, they were not bothersome or stiff. The pure cotton breathes beautifully.

I’ve been living in these dark wash, wide-leg jeans by Citizens of Humanity. Dressed down with a classic white tee or fixed up with a fitted blazer, this timeless denim style is a hero piece that never fails to hug me in all the right places.

I wasn’t convinced baggy jeans would be for me until I tried on the Ayla from Citizens of Humanity. The denim is soft but not stretchy and they have a just-right slouch throughout the leg with generous cuffs at the bottom–a combo that magically works for my petite (I’m 5’1″!) frame. I wore the light wash all summer with sandals and sneakers, and picked up the darker hue for fall to wear with chunky boots and mesh flats. They do run a bit large in the hips, so size down if you want a closer fit.

DL1961’s Patti jean is constantly in my denim rotation. The flattering high-rise cut makes for a seriously comfortable and easy fit. Plus, the versatile dark-wash goes with any top in my closet!
