Director Trevor Stuurman, joined by a team of some of the country’s most respected media creators, founded The Manor — a new, multimedia home for Africa’s greatest stories.
Created as a place where creativity and community come together, The Manor’s debut Welcome Issue is now live, and free, on themanor.africa. Created over the course of a year, The Manor founder Trevor Stuurman documented the process of realising the now-historic Shaka iLembe production, deep-diving into a series that has broken every record in African television history.
From pre-production, to documenting the production on-set, art directing the premiere evening, and the shooting of The Manor’s first editorial shoot with the cast and creators (shot in Johannesburg on the eve of the public release of the series), the Welcome Issue is the start of a pursuit toward slower journalism, and a tribute to the Shaka series’ own dedication to deep storytelling over the course of its 7 years journey.
“When I look back, creating something like the Manor has always been about access, because so much of my formative years as a photographer have always been about getting access. But at its heart, The Manor is about creating a table, and not asking for a seat. A place for great African storytelling, no matter the medium or subject.” Trevor Stuurman
