The $2K Sofia Coppola-Designed Cashmere Sweaters of Our Dreams Are Here

Any chance to get our hands on anything Sofia Coppola-adjacent in fashion, we take. (MilkFed, always thinking of you.) So, when the acclaimed director and longtime Chanel collaborator announced she’d be releasing a capsule with the French fashion house’s cashmere-maker, our ears perked up.

Founded in 1903, Barrie is one of the oldest cashmere knitting manufacturers in Scotland. It started working with Chanel in the ’80s, producing its cashmere knitwear. In 2012, the French fashion house acquired Barrie, and it became one of its 12 métiers d’art. Two years later, it launched a brand of the same name, with Chanel alumnus (of both the Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard eras) Augustin Dol-Maillot joining as artistic director in 2018.

Dol-Maillot was inspired by Coppola’s style (she’d been a Barrie customer for years), with a focus on the pieces she wants to pack and wear while traveling.

“I’ve always been fascinated by Sofia’s precision in terms of looks and attitude. She always finds the perfect balance between timeless pieces and a modern silhouette,” Dol Maillot said, in a statement. “The collaboration seeks to achieve this same effect by focusing on the tiny details that transform apparently simple pieces to make them timeless and desirable at the same time. I have always considered Sofia’s elegance to have that special touch which makes it relaxed and comfortable, yet so stylish. To me, this is exactly what the Barrie DNA is made of, and this collaboration is the dream opportunity to embody that.”

There are 17 pieces total, spanning apparel and accessories (from T-shirts to beanies to jumpsuits) in a timeless, restrained color palette of navy, black, grey, khaki and pops of pastel pink. (The only print is a stripe on a long-sleeved sweater and on a knit set.) There’s a special bright-pink label and custom buttons that bring together the Barrie logo and Coppola’s initials. These are investment pieces, to be sure: Prices range from $665 for a knit T-shirt, to $2,275 for a pullover, up to $8,280 for a knit puffer jacket.

“It was so fun to work with Augustin and the Barrie team and imagine my dream pieces: the idea of a travel wardrobe that works together, that is cozy and chic,” Coppola said, in a statement. “I love what Barrie has done, I will be living in them this winter!”

For the campaign, Coppola and Barrie tapped fellow Chanel girl Margaret Qualley to pose for photographer Melodie McDaniel in a hotel in Paris, with the resulting images looking like… well, they were plucked from a Sofia Coppola film. (Which is to say, they will be going on the fall/winter mood board.)
