Taika Waititi does not wait until fall to really start dressin’. We’re still days away from the official start of autumn, but the acclaimed filmmaker has already had an especially Big Fit-filled September. (This isn’t his first style streak, and it certainly won’t be his last.) The Oscar-winning filmmaker has traversed from Venice to Toronto to New York, from galas and film festivals to fashion week and beyond, all without ever taking his foot off the sartorial gas pedal. Hell, he even walked his first NYFW runway for the always-luxurious Hermès.
Waititi’s super stylish month began at a gala event in Venice, with wife Rita Ora by his side, sporting a heavily unbuttoned shirt beneath an unstructured patchwork jacket. A week later, he popped up at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of his film, Next Goal Wins, in a shimmering gray Fendi suit, playfully accessorized with orange-tinted sunglasses and a necklace and rings (five of ’em!) from the boutique jewelry brand Vargas Goteo. (While at TIFF, he also caught Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard’s directorial debut, donning a patterned jacket and pants with burgundy Dr. Martens.)
Then came New York. Waititi stopped by an event to support Ora in a Gucci cap, white chino pants, and a bomber-jacket-style cardigan from London label King & Tuckfield. Later that night, he arrived at the MTV Video Awards in yet another number from the same brand: a louche floral-printed set featuring shades of jade green and nectarine orange. Then, to cap off his epic two-week stretch, the director walked the Hermès runway in a sleek, all-black ensemble worn underneath an opulent and cozy vest. (On the runway that evening, Waititi was joined by Beef breakout Young Manzino and professional BMXer Nigel Sylvester.)
All of these looks are what we’ve come to love and expect from Waititi: they’re bold and playful, sometimes mischievous, but always highly stylish. The actor-director proves that when done right, the biggest swings—wild prints and patterns, playfully oversized proportions—are always worth taking, especially when worn with a subtle wink. (Another lesson from his big month of fashion? Pitch-perfect stubble is the ultimate fashion accessory.) With temperatures finally starting to drop, let Waititi be your sartorial spirit guide and go full throttle with your fits all autumn long.
