“I really love you guys for thinking this is my chic hairstyle,” Sofia Richie Grainge confesses from the chandeliered bathroom we’ve all become familiar with through her TikTok. “Because this is my lazy girl hairstyle.”
Her most recent viral tutorial was dedicated to recreating her self-described “sleek lazy girl bun”—though if you’re wearing it to Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party… feels a little fancier than my version of weekend hair.
Pre-covid, Grainge shares that her hair wasn’t growing past her shoulders because of “all of the bleaching, all of the dyeing.” That’s when she decided to make a simple switch during the smoothing step of getting her signature hair look.
“Instead of gel, I decided to start using a regenerative hair mask,” she confesses, while smoothing Christophe Robin’s Regenerating Mask with Prickly Pear Oil through her now waist-skimming lengths, taking care to work it into the hair at the nape of her neck and her ends. “I’m convinced it’s the only reason my hair grew so lusciously during COVID.”
Regenerative hair masks are formulated specifically for those who color or chemically treat hair, and they’re all about reversing damage.
Grainge’s hairstylist Gregory Russell not only approves of this hack—he thinks it’s “genius.”
“You will get shine and smoothness as a gel when using a mask, but you’re treating you hair well with all the nourishing benefits as well,” Russell says. “For curly or coarse girls, you might need to add a mousse around the edges for control.” He likes Pureology’s Style + Protect Weightless Volume.
