“I don’t think I’ve ever said this to anyone in my life,” Selena Gomez utters with a tiny cringe at the end of our interview. “But if you’re planning on buying something from Rare Beauty, please buy my product on October 10th.”
The day holds a special place for the singer, actress, and Rare Beauty founder. October 10th is World Mental Health Day, and in celebration, Sephora will be donating 100 percent of all Rare Beauty’s product sales worldwide to the brand’s complementary non-profit, the Rare Impact Fund. It’s something that truly excites her.
Gomez has been open about her own journey with mental health. There was her 2022 documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me, which shares the story of the star going public with her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Since then, she has continued to speak openly about her mental health struggles, her battle with Lupus (she underwent a kidney transplant in 2017), and how it’s all affecting her daily life.
“I don’t feel good all the time,” Gomez says. One of her biggest outlets is spending time with her 10-year-old sister, Gracie Elliott. “She reminds me of a perspective in life that can be a bit simpler and pure. Even just having a moment with her makes me feel better.”
The ability to be her true self around supportive friends, like fellow pop star Taylor Swift, also makes a huge difference in her life. “I can gauge the difference between someone who wants to actually get to know me versus someone who just wants to know me as a person,” Gomez says. “I’m grateful that I can tell.”
Gomez also has some advice for people who want to support a loved one who is going through a mental health struggle of their own: “Start with listening. One of the key components of a friendship for me is trust. I would also say: Be careful with who you trust. Hopefully someone can just hear you out and not judge you. I believe in unconditional love and that if you can’t be your authentic self, maybe you shouldn’t be around those people.”
On October 10, Sephora will be donating 100 percent of Rare Beauty product sales worldwide, both in-store and online, to the Rare Impact Fund in honor of World Mental Health Day.
