The Spring 2024 Alexander McQueen runway show marked the end of an era.
It was a final bow for Sarah Burton, who took over as creative director after Lee McQueen’s death in 2010. Announcing her departure from the brand a few weeks ago, Burton reflected on her gratitude for the late founding designer: “Above all, I want to thank Lee Alexander McQueen. He taught me so much, and I am eternally grateful to him,” she said in a statement. And her final collection, which she presented on Saturday in Paris, paid tribute to him, reviving many of the motifs that were recurring signatures throughout his body of work.
For Spring 2024, Burton showcases red roses on little black dresses and flowing gowns. (McQueen often used florals to explore dualities, such as beauty and death, and power and fragility.) Metallics and strong silhouettes also factor heavily into the collection, while a variety of fabrics — flow-y chiffons, lace and matte leathers — underscore a tension between fluidity and rigidity.
When it came to the show’s casting, Burton certainly went out with a bang: She tapped Kaia Gerber, sporting strong-shouldered suiting with cutouts, to open, while Naomi Campbell closed in a liquid metal fringe skirt and sculpted bustier.
