Russell Westbrook is—among many things—a nine-time NBA All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, and doting husband. But let’s not forget that the Clippers player is also a top-tier dresser.
Westbrook’s fashion journey began in 2008 when he was drafted onto the Seattle SuperSonics. For the occasion he wore a gray-blue suit with a gold tie—a nod to his alma mater. “Colors were inspired by UCLA,” he says. “This was my first custom suit I ever had.”
Another watershed moment in the athlete’s career—both in fashion and basketball—was the 2012 London Summer Olympics. “I was super hyped because I love double-breasted suits,” Westbrook says of the Ralph Lauren look he and his fellow American Olympians wore for the Opening Ceremony.
The point guard has adopted a bold personal style over the years, including torn-up shirts and skirts. While he knows they won’t be for everyone, he stands by his approach to fashion. “Yes there will be good reviews, bad reviews, but doesn’t really matter,” he says, “as long as I feel good about it, I hope it inspires people to wear and be outgoing and outspoken.”
For Vogue’s latest “Life In Looks,” Westbrook takes us through the most important fashion moments of his life, from draft day to his friendship with the late Virgil Abloh.
