What do you get when you mix off-duty style with real-life ballerina aesthetic? All the sheer little nothings and tutu-like confections but with an ultra-wearable twist. Or, in other words, the Reformation x New York City Ballet collaboration, which is officially available today.
The 19-style capsule collection touches on Reformation’s signature, vintage-inspired silhouettes with a heavy dose of ballet influence to create the ultimate tribute to ballet culture. Think: the perfect midi-length ivory tutu, a little white lace dress, a black lace bodysuit, and a burgundy dress covered in rosettes. An original red toile print is reworked with ballerina-like figurines for maxi tube dress. Also up for grabs? Two ballet flat styles: the Mikayla, which is designed to look like a pointe shoe with a chic square toe, and the Barbara, a classic ballet slipper, complete with elastic ties gently crisscrossing over the top of the foot. Prices for the entire capsule range from $98-$348.
The campaign takes inspiration from real life ballerinas, too. Reformation cast three ballerinas from New York City Ballet’s Corps de Ballet, including Ava Sautter, India Bradley, and Kennedy Targosz, and photographed them alongside models at Lincoln Center. “Ref has deep roots in NYC,” says Hali Borenstein, CEO of Reformation. “We opened our first ever retail location here–so we are honored to pay homage to an iconic institution like New York City Ballet in celebration of its 75th anniversary.” For the occasion, Reformation truly leaned into the celebration of all the festivities. “New York City Ballet’s 75th season opened with Jewels, an important ballet created by the Company’s Founding Choreographer George Balanchine,” added Borenstein. “Our design team was inspired by this particular work during a site visit to the Koch Theater and brought it into the collection through shades of ruby and emerald as well as the ballet toile print created especially for New York City Ballet.”
In addition to the dainty tulle, chiffon, silk, satin, and lace concoctions–and, of course, some star leg warmers, wrap sweaters, and bodysuits, Reformation put its signature sustainable twist on just about everything. There’s deadstock, TENCEL fibers, eco-silk and a special recycled cashmere blend—100% cashmere with 87% less carbon impact than conventional cashmere.
“This is a truly beautiful collection that brings together the best of both of our worlds, merging the elegance of classical ballet with Reformation’s vintage-inspired aesthetic,” says Katherine Brown, NYCB’s Executive Director. “Many of our dancers already know, love and wear Reformation’s clothes when ‘off duty.’ This is a wonderful and natural partnership.”
Fashion has long had a love affair with ballet, and it looks like the obsession continues. If you thought you had seen enough of the ballet flat, you’d be wrong–because Reformation’s biggest fans are sure to snap these ones up quick. Shop the collection now, before it’s gone.
