admin The US Open, unlike Wimbledon, doesn’t have an explicit dress code. Timothée Chalamet might show up in an oversized hoodie; Matthew McConaughey will sport a breezy white suit; and then a few rows down, there’s Rami Malek in his pajamas. Yes, really.
The former Bond villain, who attended the Open with The Crown star Emma Corrin, took the relaxed dress code to its logical extreme in a green-and-navy striped pajama shirt. And, like all good pajama shirts, it came with the traditional camp collar detailing of bed sets—which, granted, is a neckline that’s become a pretty common sight in menswear of the last few years. But by going night mode, Malek maintains the polish of regular tailoring, but keeps it relaxed with a looser, sleepier fit.

His look spoke to a wider trend in menswear, too. For the past couple of seasons, the world’s biggest designers have pioneered a blurring of the lines between sleepwear and daywear, and the two have pretty much become one. For Spring/Summer 2023, Bianca Saunders sent models down the catwalk in silky pajama sets that are made for non-REM time, too. Over at Celine, creative director Hedi Slimane had guys wear pajama shorts and tailored blazers, while Mr. Giorgio Armani put striped pajama sets front and center of his own collection for his Emporio Armani offshoot. Meanwhile, over at Saint Laurent, there were sheer and floaty suits that riffed on traditional sleepwear.
Malek is fluent in rocking a big party shirt, too. Amidst his ongoing partnership with Saint Laurent, the 42-year-old went full 4-a.m. Parisian dark lord in lamé and shimmery shirts. There’s been wild prints, and Western shirts, and very neat and subtle Mandarin collars. But the eternal north star of good fits has, arguably, made the biggest noise by going horizontal in a pajama shirt. The lesson? Don’t sleep on sleepwear.
