admin Rabanne’s Spring 2024 runway show was held in a room with a glass ceiling at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the mid-day heat beating down on guests. It was uncomfortably warm (as many European shows have been, actually), but once the show was underway, it became clear that the sunlight was a crucial component of the collection, made up almost entirely of light-reflecting materials.
An abundance of metal mesh and silver beading is not unexpected for a Rabanne show, but Artistic Director Julien Dossena found interesting new ways to create with it. Per the show notes, he was inspired by two temporal extremes: civilizations from the the distant past, and the far-off future, a melding of mythical, handcrafted artifacts with his own ideas of what the world could look like centuries from now. There is also “an exploration of the rapport between tactility and sensuality,” seen in garments that reveal the body via cutouts or short, fringed hemlines, but are made with heavy, sometimes loud, multi-textured materials.
With her silver and copper armor, gladiator sandals and sculptural headwear, the Spring 2024 Rabanne woman feels powerful and ready to fight; at the same time, her outfit is a work of art, sparkling glamoursly in the the sunlight.
