admin If you’re a Nicolas Ghesquière superfan, this Louis Vuitton collection is sure to please.
His latest for the French fashion house — shown at its still-under-construction store on the Champs-Elysées on Monday, in front of half of Hollywood — feels closer to his early work than what we’ve seen in a minute. Maybe Ghesquière’s reminiscing, as he nears the 10-year anniversary of his debut for Louis Vuitton; maybe he’s aware of the fervor surrounding his era at Balenciaga to this day. Whatever the reason, the designer revisits a lot of the hallmarks of the work that made him one of the most renowned creatives working today.
Of course, the complex, futurist, sharp, structured look associated most closely with Ghesquière has appeared at Louis Vuitton. However, at times, it’s felt exaggerated in a way that enhanced the overall storytelling of the collection and not necessarily the power of each individual look. Spring 2024 is cohesive (and there are a handful of takes on the same concept, in different colorways and prints), but each piece stands on its own, wrestling with dissonant ideas and putting different textures, materials or shapes in conversation with one another to create something that’s challenging, to both the person wearing it and whoever comes across them: the oversized bagginess of a leather bomber jacket against the flouncing airiness of a tiered chiffon maxi skirt; a pink pastel tartan clashing with brown stripes and a thick white leather belt; belts hold up extra-high trousers over an off-the-shoulder bustier top. Real heads might see some early Ghesquière in the sleeveless mini dresses featuring an asymmetric ruffle detail and belted at the waist.
Where past collections have gone heavy on embellishment — beading, sequins — Spring 2024 pares it back significantly, disappearing into a stripe or the texture of the fabric. Styling the models in white opaque tights also gives the whole assortment a clean baseline for not only the clothes, but also the shoes (which are mostly pointed-toe heels and split-toe sandals this season).
Big milestones will make anyone feel retrospective, even an always-lightyears-ahead thinker like Ghesquière. And in this case, it really works to push Louis Vuitton to the next level.
