Throughout August, we’ll be shining a light on your summer style. Here’s how Joy Montgomery, British Vogue’s senior commerce writer, is spending the summer, plus what’s in her suitcase…
What’s your essential summer purchase—and why do you love it?
As basic as it sounds, I couldn’t live without a good pair of sunglasses during the summer months. When chosen well, they have the ability to make any ensemble feel infinitely more directional and/or polished. This season, I’ve been inseparable from Victoria Beckham’s yellow-tinted aviators, which my friends call my “’80s sheriff sunglasses.” I take it as a compliment.
Where’s a place you love to visit—and what makes it special to you?
My husband’s parents have a little house on the Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of the UK. We got engaged there and ended up slightly stranded there for eight months during lockdown, so it has a lot of fond memories for us. We love visiting in the warmer months to swim in the sea, eat fresh seafood, rummage through car boot sales, and generally disconnect from the Big Smoke.
What’s your favorite swimwear—and the beach where you’ll be wearing it?
I feel like every year for the last 10 years I’ve embarked on a fruitless search to find the perfect bikini. Whether it was fit, durability, or style, nothing ever ticked all the boxes––that was until I came across Peony’s underwired set. Coming in a zesty shade of orangey red and in a sturdy ribbed fabric, it was flattering, comfortable, and kept its shape after multiple wears and washes. I’ll be wearing it on a beach on the east coast of Sri Lanka this summer, a country I’ve never visited before. I can’t wait.
