Italian tailoring has an uncertain future as fewer young people enter the craft
GQ writer Joshua Hunt visited Naples to explore the world of Italian tailoring and more specifically, its uncertain future, as a declining number of younger people are taking up the craft to preserve its heritage. Hunt visited three premiere Italian sartorie — Rubinacci, Ciardi and Panico — for a glimpse behind the curtain into the tailoring crisis. The craft is a difficult, time-consuming and intricate job that takes years to master, and the demographic of tailors-in-training is shifting. “Young people now don’t come to tailoring wanting to become workers in great tailor shops,” Gaetano Aloisio, president of the National Academy of Tailors, told GQ. “They want to become entrepreneurs. Today, the young people we are training, unfortunately, don’t guarantee us tailors and our tailor shops a workforce for the future.” {GQ}
