Mimi Keene’s Guide to ‘Shaky Shaky’ Mascara and ‘Dotting’ Lip Liner

Sex Education actress Mimi Keene likes to keep it simple when it comes to her beauty routine. “I want to look like Sandra Bullock when she’s running with the dogs in Practical Magic,” she says of her ultimate reference point. “That scene, the way she looks, her shorts, her hair in the wind: that’s my vibe.”

Keene’s recreation is focused on six-step skincare routine, then finished off with her “easy, glowy, day-to-night” makeup look. Her own beauty education started early—“secondary school,” she says. “If I could go back to doing a skincare routine as a baby, I would. It’s definitely my favorite time in the evening.”

To start, she pulls her hair out of her face with a headband then applies Blistex balm on her lips. Next up, a clever trick for staying dry. “I don’t like water from the sink because it drips down my arms,” she explains while massing Youth to the People’s Superberry Dream Cleansing Balm into her skin. Instead, she shows us something she picked up on set: Microwave a damp towel for a moment in the microwave, drape it over your face, and your cleanser will melt right off.

“It’s like a modern version of cucumbers,” Keene says of the 111 Skin Rose Gold Illuminating Eye Mask, which are made with actual gold to help brighten your under eye area. After the eye patches are gently tapped into place, next up is a “very light moisturizer”—which comes in a convenient mist form. Skincare is finished off with more Blistex balm and sunscreen before we move onto makeup.

When you already have a glowing base, you don’t need much else to get Keene’s look. She smooths on Glossier’s Futuredew Facial Oil-Serum Hybrid then adds Armani Beauty’s Luminous Silk Concealer just where she needs it, like breakouts and in her under eye area. The Jones Road Lip and Cheek Stick adds in a flush across her cheeks, on the bridge of her nose, and eyelids. While brushing her brows, Keene reminisces about the UK trend of “foundation lips”—adding, “if you were cool you had no lips. It was a time in history and it’s over, thank god.”

Her mascara application is a secret she learned from her mom: “We’re going to do the ‘shaky shaky,’ which is what my mom taught me.” And the final step is her lip, always starting with a nude lip liner finished off with a touch more of her trusty Blistex. “It does have a color!” Keene says. “It’s just very, very faint.”
