All summer long, famous fellas like Timothée Chalamet, Pete Davidson, and Justin Bieber have dabbled in the fashion dark arts: sporting Canadian tuxedos, custom Uggs, and JNCO jeans, respectively. The celebrity girlies, meanwhile, have never looked cooler. In June, Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lawrence ran sartorial circles around their Hollywood brethren in Oxford shirts, slouchy trousers, and sporty sneakers. That same month, Rihanna invented an entirely new way to wear a watch. Now, Katie Holmes has ushered in an early start to gray sweatpants season, proving that this year’s menswear summer is, once again, for the girls.
Katie Holmes, one of New York City’s great dressers, kept things casual for a stroll around Manhattan earlier this week: a well-worn graphic tee from the Ofr gallery and bookstore in Paris, featuring work by the German photographer Huma Rosentalski; slouchy Alo Yoga sweatpants, with their elastic hems scrunched up over white tube socks; and, crucially, a pair of black Adidas Sambas. She also wore the pants again on Thursday, swapping out the Sambas for a pair of the German sportswear giant’s Retropy sneakers.
The hiked-up sweatpants placed this look a hop, skip, and a jump away from a Timothée Chalamet errand-running ensemble. And despite the dreaded August-in-New-York humidity, Holmes made them look positively breezy. (On that note: if you’re trying to dress like Timothée Chalamet, we’d advise following Holmes’s lead over Daniel Day-Lewis’s.) Either way, Holmes has thrown down the gauntlet on the official start of gray sweatpants season—which is to the fall equinox as sundress season is to the spring—quite possibly to Drake’s chagrin. Because if anyone should “own” Gray Sweatpants Season™, it should be Drake, right? Alas.
