Given the 13 years (and counting) Norman Reedus has spent slaying zombies as Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead and his eponymous spinoff, you might only be able to picture the man in a torn-up tee covered in blood and guts. But in real life, Reedus happens to clean up very nicely—as he did on Thursday night while attending a black-tie gala at the New York City Ballet with his wife, Diane Kruger.
Reedus opted for a murdered-out black tie look for the occasion: black velvet suit, black shirt, black bowtie, and a fun little pair of black patent-leather tassel loafers. (Kruger contrasted his look in her diamond-embossed, ivory-toned Givenchy gown.) His tousled, shoulder-length hair and gold rectangular belt buckle eased up the ensemble considerably, which is a useful reminder to those who find themselves formalwear-averse. These days, ceremonious evening wear is skewing funkier than ever, and Reedus is in good company with guys like Donald Glover who have officially decamped to the more casual (though no less compelling) realm of “creative black tie.”
Wearing an all-black suit is Reedus’s go-to move—he wore a similarly monochromatic look to the Saint Laurent show during Paris Fashion Week last month. Hollywood action guys like Reedus, Keanu Reeves, and Michael B. Jordan all favor imposingly dark suits for a reason: They’re dressy and edgy, but still very simple to pull off and style correctly.. It’s probably just a coincidence that Daryl always wore all black on The Walking Dead, but then again, Reedus apparently took home his final-episode wardrobe when the OG series wrapped filming.
“I walked out with my entire outfit. I just, I didn’t change clothes,” Reedus told People about his last day on set. “I was hugging people and crying and saying goodbye to everybody that I just ended up driving home in my outfit. So I have all of it.” In the same interview, Reedus also shared that he’d acquired “like, eight crossbows” over the course of filming. Wow!
