There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
Victoria Beckham is known for her clean, refined personal style… now. But before she became one of the faces of more conservative, “quiet luxury” approach to dressing, she did have some more eye-catching fashion moments.
Life was a little different in the summer of 2006: Back then, Posh Spice was deep in her WAG era, making headlines for her time spent in the town of Baden-Baden during the FIFA World Cup in Germany. While the British media’s coverage of the women was entirely sensationalist and misogynistic (shocking), that’s not what we’ve gathered to talk about today — instead, we’re here to bask in the absolute glory that was Becks’ soccer-stand outfits.
There’s something just so aggressively 2006 about this outfit in particular — consisting of a bright red “England Rock$” tank top (featuring a bulldog and a dollar sign instead of the letter “S”) with teeny-tiny white short-shorts, oversized sunglasses and a larger-than-life white Birkin — that scratches my brain in a really satisfying way. The look itself is relatively simple, but the pieces are impossible to ignore. It’s so peak-Y2K, so-peak-retro-sports.
For hair, Becks kept it standard, her balayaged tresses styled in that classic mid-’00s blowout — quite a departure from today’s slicked-back buns.
If you want to reference this slice of British fashion history, look no further: These Beckham-in-2006 dupes will have you ready to cheer on this summer’s Women’s World Cup in style.
