Great Outfits in Fashion History: Serena Williams in a Studded Leather Jacket at the 2004 US Open

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

This year marks the first US Open since Serena Williams’ retirement from her history-making and record-breaking tennis career, also marking the first US Open without William’s incredible tennis fashion.

For more than 20 years, Williams always put on a stylish display on the court  — whether with vibrant neons, untraditional silhouettes or even full-blown tutus. In the ultimate style sendoff, Williams notably wore a sparkling, crystal-covered dress, made custom by Nike, to play her final tournament in 2022. Since Williams won’t be on the court this year, it’s only right to reflect on another of her memorable match looks — this time, from the 2004 US Open.

For her third round of women’s singles, Williams opted for an all-black ensemble (also by Nike), wearing a dress featuring silver studs all around the neck, down the midline and at the hips. The GOAT paired the look with a heart-chain bracelet on one wrist and a matching black studded wristband on the other, rounding out her accessories with diamond-encrusted hoop earrings and a black headband that debuted the official Serena logo.

Instead of a typical athletic sneaker, Williams sported what can only be described as knee-high sneaker boots, which Carly Ellis, NikeCourt’s design lead, told Footwear News was “inspired by the shoe of the moment: the Nike Shox.”

After defeating her challenger, Tatiana Golovin, Williams picked up a matching, studded leather jacket and zipped it three-quarters up to complete the outfit.

Though it may be impossible to match Williams’ tournament fashion game, it doesn’t mean you can’t try. Shop some of our favorite stylish tennis pieces below.
