There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
Almost a decade before her film broke records by raking in $155 in the first three days of domestic ticket sales (the biggest debut for a female director), Greta Gerwig was sowing the seeds for the “Barbie” Cinematic Universe — or at least, that’s what it looks like in retrospect.
It was 2014, and she was a guest of Chanel’s at the house’s annual Artists Dinner during the Tribeca Film Festival, a famously fashionable affair. Naturally, Gerwig was dressed in a look from the latest ready-to-wear collection: a knee-length white-and-pink tweed dress with sleeves that reached the elbows from Spring 2014. She ditched the jacket and some of the key accessories seen on the runway (such as an oversized pearl choker, bracelet and ring set, plus the sock boots and rigid metal belt). Instead, she wore simple studs, nude pointed-toe pumps and a pretty special bag.
This was during the Karl Lagerfeld era, where accessories were a stand-out — so Gerwig had plenty of excellent options to choose from. And she picked correctly, carrying a boxy pink-and-orange plexiglass clutch with a colorblocked strap, also from Spring 2014.
It’s one of those novelty designs that’s exceedingly hard to find on the secondhand market, but we imagine it currently lives in Barbie’s rare-Chanel-filled Dreamhouse closet.
