Gabriela Hearst knows her customer. That much is clear from the ideas she iterates season after season, runway after runway — and that the customer then arrives wearing head-to-toe to each biannual function: She likes her staples and her separates, in neutrals that feel refined and timeless but never basic, that she can build on with every new drop, infused with erudite references.
In the case of Spring 2024, that inspiration came from the Druids, a class of ancient Celtic priests. (It’s not the first time Hearst cites a religious leader as a muse.) In the collection notes, Hearst wrote a description that reads like a manifesto to her customer: “She is entering, head facing forward, she is not somber or ecstatic, she has acted. Two hands, a sword and proof, tools and symbols. They stand beside her, she can sense them in their dark cloaks, eight on one side and six on the other. The walk is one of triumph but with a somber scent from having seen more of the evolution that still needs to happen. Fear or love, she is a mirror of you.”
That strength and self-assuredness translates, to Hearst, into protective suiting, ponchos and other forms of sartorial armors, in her preferred materials (leather, cashmere, wool and linen) and color palette (creams, rich browns, blacks and greys). The spiritual undertones continue in the knits, which borrow from the work of Haitian artist Levoy Exil and were crafted by artisans in Bolivia. As always, sustainability’s a top consideration when it comes to sourcing textiles and actually producing the collection. (The leather patches, for example, are made from scraps of the brand’s handbags.)
