It is a truth universally acknowledged that famous people wake up in the morning and switch on their antennae. And over the past few weeks, it would seem Meghan Markle, Angelina Jolie and Victoria Beckham have all been tuning into the same wavelength, their telepathic transmissions resulting in some quite obvious psychic mirroring. In other words, they have all been spotted in similar-colored outfits.
Earlier this month, Meghan Markle dressed in the sartorial equivalent of TikTok’s “latte make-up” trend—a loose-fitting caramel two-piece from Bleusalt—while announcing the 2023 recipients of the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund. Angelina Jolie was then photographed in 50 shades of beige—a cashmere camel suit—while heading to the theatre in New York. And then Victoria Beckham wore a cream-colored shirt dress—with a coordinating Birkin, sun hat and sandals in gingerbread browns—while dining at the Lo Scoglio da Tommaso restaurant in Nerano on the Amalfi Coast.
These kinds of ensembles—all tonal, sloping silhouettes—are a timeworn shortcut to being perceived as glamorous and demure. To dress in harmonious tones of brown is to telegraph wisdom, comfort and trust, like Amal Clooney in all her court-approved camel coats. Perhaps it tracks, then, that Jolie and Markle—two philanthropic ambassadors of the celeb world—should also want to channel that attitude. I imagine Beckham just needed to recuperate from the Croots and WAG trousers she had otherwise been wearing in Miami.
