Another day, another example of a well-heeled celeb heeding the call of GQ’s new list of 59 dos and don’ts for getting dressed right now: As David Beckham can attest, all shoes look better with socks. Yes, even sandals.
The patriarch of the Beckham family may have spent the better part of his summer dressed like he was perpetually just a balmy gust of wind away from an Amalfi-bound yacht (which, as it turns out, he was)—but now that the weather is changing, a still-sunkissed Becks is transitioning his wardrobe. This week, it’s back to business in Paris, where Becks and his family—including children Brooklyn, 24; Cruz, 18; and Harper, 12—have breezed into town to sit front row at Victoria Beckham’s Paris Fashion Week show, which took place on Friday. Peak time for some transitional-style adjustments.
To the show, DB (as in David Beckham) wore a navy DB (as in double-breasted) suit, an easygoing white T-shirt, aviator shades, and sleek brown-leather strappy sandals over a pair of ribbed taupe socks. Cozy, almost certainly; elegant, strangely so. Were shoobies ever meant to look this luxurious? If you’re David Beckham, this is more or less your destiny. But if you don’t happen to be one of the most glitzy Brits on the planet, there are rules to pulling off this look. Another hit from the dos and dont’s list that Becks checks off here? It’s that pants—especially if you’re going to rock them with socks and sandals—look better with a break. To err on the right side of dorky, make sure the hem of your pants skims the middle of your sandals. Otherwise, bon voyage!
