For each day of competition, plus three more practice days, each member of Team Europe gets polo shirts, quarter-zips and sweater vests combining technical material and superfine wool, tailored four-pocket trousers in “Rain System®-treated stretch wool,” waterproof jackets, vests, and pants, plus socks and a belt. Loro Piana also supplied the team with dark navy suits and loafers for official events, as well as sweatsuits for hanging out at their hotel—enough Loro to make a Roy’s cold heart race.
For those of us who didn’t make the team, the line also includes a special capsule collection of golf gear—smart white windbreakers, a beige leather golf bag—that is only available this weekend at the Loro Piana boutique in Rome.
According to WWD, the gear ranges from $520 to $3,450. And, apparently, it’s worth every penny: this morning, the Europeans demolished the Americans, who failed to win a single match on day one of the tournament for the first time in history. (To be fair to the American side, they look great, too, in their USA trucker hats by official team supplier Polo Ralph Lauren.)
In a video published to promote the partnership, first-time Team Europe member Robert MacIntyre discusses the kit at a fitting before the tournament. “To wear the Ryder Cup uniform, it’s the most special feeling in golf, for a European,” the Scotsman says. When his Loro Piana arrives, he approaches his new wardrobe with a commensurate sense of awe. “Lovely stuff,” he says.
