At the 2023 Venice Film Festival, Red Carpet Menswear Is Back

You’re not wrong to think all these red carpet photos coming out of the 2023 Venice Film Festival feel a bit jarring. Given the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes against the industry’s top brass, it’s been a while since we’ve seen this many A-list actors all dressed up for a movie premiere.

While this year’s seaside cinema summit is certainly slimmer on the talent front (sorry to Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, who would’ve been there to promote their upcoming Luca Guadagnino tennis flick Challengers), there are still a handful of stars shoring up along the city’s famous canals. Adam Driver and Patrick Dempsey were able to put on their bowties to promote the Michael Mann film Ferrari, for example, thanks to the unions’ interim agreement exempting actors and writers involved in films backed by independent distributors from the promotional ban.

“Some of our fellow members have been subject to negative comments for participating in projects with an interim agreement, particularly when it comes time for them to promote their work, including at festivals,” wrote SAG-AFTRA in a statement this week. “To be crystal clear, once an agreement is in place, we fully encourage all of our SAG-AFTRA members to work under that agreement AND to promote work made under that agreement.”

All of which is to say, we finally get to see the actors involved in independently backed projects in their red-carpet best, which really is a win for the people. (And lest we forget—directors like Guadagnino and Yorgos Lanthimos have amazing style, too.) Scroll on to see the best looks from the 2023 Venice Film Festival so far.
