With fashion month in full swing, our Spring 2024 trend detector is activated — and oh, have we clocked a number of looks that we can’t wait to try. And we don’t have to wait six months to take some of them out for the spin, because so many of the top spring collections contain outerwear propositions that are perfect for autumn, and especially for the transitional period between summer and fall.
Buildable layers are key when dressing for unpredictable weather, when it’s not quite puffer jacket season but it’s definitely chilly enough to need some coverage. That’s where these lightweight jacket styles, seen in the Spring 2024 collections, come in: There are familiar silhouettes and go-to transitional textiles (oversized, tailored, denim, leather), as well as some less predictable newness (like 3.1 Phillip Lim’s patch-pocketed day jackets in sheer organza).
Ahead, our favorite Spring 2024-inspired coats and jackets you can wear right now and welcome fall in.
Leather Jackets
From Dion Lee to Alaïa to Khaite, a number of Spring 2024 collections revolve around stand-out leather pieces, specifically of the distressed-effect variety. There’s faded gray and chocolate brown styles, fitted biker and relaxed bomber shapes, all of which evoke that thrifted look, of something that feels vintage and chicly worn-in.

Tailored Jackets
Strong tailoring continues to be a common thread for Spring 2024, with designers including Tory Burch, Ulla Johnson and Anna Quan making a case for clean lines and more traditional outerwear shapes — which is great considering it’s the time of year when a sleek blazer may be all you need.

Trench Coats
Brands love a trench coat in a spring collection, but it’s an autumn staple as well. On the latest runways, we’ve seen denim and leather trenches (Proenza Schouler), as well as several satin styles (Puppets and Puppets, Tory Burch, Sandy Liang and Altuzarra), signaling a budding trend.
