admin Ulla Johnson is adding a beautiful new twist to her typically bohemian look for Spring 2024.
For the first time ever, the designer collaborated with a fine artist to bring the canvas into three-dimensional space through flowing gowns and tailored pieces. Three landscape works by Brooklyn-based painter Shara Hughes are featured on various looks throughout the collection. Each artwork envelopes the fabric in a psychedelic and punchy pattern, brought to life even further by the movement of the clothes during Johnson’s runway show on Sunday.
“It was very exciting to honor her work, but also to have it exist within a larger world of our work,” Johnson tells Fashionista backstage. “(We’re) never just taking something two-dimensional and literally presenting it, but really giving it a life. I think she herself was so excited to see something that’s been flat live in a 3-D world and walked into life by a beautiful woman.”
For next spring, the Ulla Johnson woman is, as always, going everywhere, which conceived a wide range of looks for day and night. Pinwheel rosettes shoot out at the hips of jumpsuits while tulle ribbons adorn the bodices of gowns. More casual crop tops, Victorian corsetry and denim skirts round out the collection. Known to imbue her designs with original, bohemian-leaning prints, Johnson also enriched Spring 2024 with smaller (but still impactful) details like lace embroidery, careful beadwork and dégradé diamonds etched into garments.
“(My global identity) informs everything that I do. I’m a bit of a wanderer and a gatherer. I’m an obsessive collector of found objects, whether they be natural or handmade, like the shells (on each seat). Each collection is a way of gathering of objects and moments and feelings,” Johnson reveals, regarding her inspiration behind the looks. “Ourselves, our garments, our environment… everything is a bit impermanent. (I was) trying to create something that felt beautiful, but also that had an evolution beyond this moment.”
The new interpretation of bohemian was well-received by the celebrity-filled front row. As cheerful as the clothes, Zooey Deschanel, Stephanie Hsu, Jason Bolden, Law Roach and Katie Holmes all sat together, fawning at the pieces as they walked by.
