In one of New York Fashion Week’s buzziest events, Helmut Lang made its triumphant return to the schedule on day one, showcasing the debut collection by its new creative director, Peter Do.
The designer has already made a name for himself as an industry favorite by way of his own namesake line, thereby adding to the buzz surrounding his first runway for Helmut Lang, who has long served as an influence of Do’s. When his appointment was announced, Do said he was “deeply committed to preserving the legacy of Helmut Lang while also infusing it with my own perspective and creativity,” and he lived up to that promise.
For Spring 2024, the designer stuck to sleek, wearable silhouettes in a black-heavy, mostly-neutral color palette. With many references to Lang’s original designs, the collection feels rooted in ’90s minimalism, while geometric splashes of color, graphic tees (referencing an old Helmut Lang campaign), printed denim and an assortment of elevated leather footwear all bring about a sense of newness and modernity — not to mention even more excitement for what’s to come from this new designer-brand pairing.
