Sotheby’s is putting up Carrie Bradshaw’s over-the-top taxidermied bird headpiece — of the first “Sex and the City” film and “And Just Like That” season two fame — up for auction this September.
Among the countless chaotically-iconic items worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the “SATC” universe, this vintage fascinator is certainly among the most memorable, accessorizing the Vivienne Westwood Fall 2007 wedding gown she donned in the 2008 movie during Carrie and Mr. Big’s cursed (attempted) trip down the aisle.
Despite its introduction during one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in the franchise’s history, the headpiece made a comeback on the most season of “And Just Like That,” with Carrie embracing it as part of her Met Gala look.
From her deepest heartbreak to her triumphant Met moment, the taxidermied bird has been with Carrie through everything, cementing the headpiece’s place among the show’s sartorial greats. Now, it’s part of Sotheby’s inaugural Fashion Icons sale, which opens for bidding on Aug. 31 through Sept. 14.
In addition to Carrie’s headpiece, the auction house will also be selling Princess Diana’s black sheep sweater (announced earlier this summer), as well as the Alexander McQueen for Givenchy gown Kate Winslet wore to the 1998 Oscars, a vintage Norman Norell dress worn by Michelle Obama and a vintage veil worn by Madonna. You can find all the items here.
Sotheby’s first-ever Fashion Icons sale continues the company’s expansion into the style sector — a trend we’re seeing across auction houses.
