How to dress as a near “geriatric millennial” who’s not actually geriatric is something I’ve been grappling with since I entered my 30s (redacted) years ago. I tend to be confronted with the issue most often in the summer months, when I start to realize that the micro-minis and short-shorts of my youth just don’t hold the appeal they once did.
So I’ve been a big fan of the long shorts trend that’s been going strong for the past year or so, although I’ve struggled to find a pair that doesn’t overwhelm my 5′ 3″ stature. Enter: Agolde’s Stella Shorts, a structured denim style that hugs close to the body and falls about 4 inches above the knee on my (admittedly not long) legs. This is a huge win as someone who rides the subway but would never want her bare skin to touch those seats (eeeek).
Like other Agolde styles, these shorts come in a variety of washes and colors, with varying levels of distressed-ness, and either cut off or hemmed edges. I’m partial to the hemmed version in “Mode,” a light-ish medium blue that looks lived-in and slightly vintage, but not overly whiskered or adorned. I’ve been wearing them pretty much nonstop lately, and I love that they’re so easy to seamlessly dress up or down, depending on the overall look and footwear you pair them with. (That, after all, is denim’s greatest appeal, in my opinion.) I even see this style taking me through early fall — I can’t wait to pair them with light layers, sweaters and jackets in those transitional early days of the new season.
Agolde Stella Shorts in Mode, $158, available here (sizes 23-34)
