I have never been one of those people who can rest their head on their pillow and instantly sleep. When else would I think about that one really embarrassing thing that happened to me in third grade? I’ve tried melatonin, pillow sprays, whiskey, meditation, pharmaceuticals, limiting screen time, cannabis, YouTube visualizers… you name it, I’ve attempted it. But my absolute favorite remedy has been Therabody’s eye-massaging SmartGoggles.
It’s a bougie solution, but it’s also one that works shockingly well and quickly. The light-gray mask is no bigger than your average pair of ski goggles and has easy-to-use buttons on either side to power it on and off and switch between modes and customizations. It’s certainly a bit heavier than its analog counterparts, but not as ridiculous-looking as basically any VR set.
After crawling into bed, I’ll put it in “Sleep” mode, which you can then customize with heat and a higher vibration speed. On top of the heat and vibration, there’s also a massage/pressure function that feels wonderful on your temples. All together, it’s unbelievably relaxing and kind of feels like my eyes and brain are getting a really nice hug. After about 15 minutes, I’m either already passed out with the mask still on or am able to drift off pretty immediately after sliding it off. Fifteen minutes! Absolutely wild, for someone with a long history of sleep struggles.
(Disclaimer: Despite having seen every episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” I am not a medical expert and the device shouldn’t be used to treat any medical conditions, but it does work for me!)
There’s also a “SmartRelax” mode that uses a little biometric sensor on the inside of the mask to track your heart rate and try to lower it. I particularly like it when I have a tension headache from staring at a screen all day; it doesn’t completely take it away but it definitely helps melt away some of the eye strain.
The smooth leather inside of the mask is a lot more comfortable than that sounds and the cotton strap is adjustable so you can get the right amount of pressure. The 150-minute battery life is dependent on what modes you’re using, but I’ve found that I only need to charge it about once a week. I also like that it folds in half and has its own little case for easy transport because I never want to go to sleep without it.
It feels very dramatic to say this eye-massaging mask changed my life, but it kind of did? Sure, I still have some sleepless nights due to existing as a human, but the restful nights? Those really feel like magic. Like Britney said, good night sweet dreams!
