There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
The ’90s would not have been the same without Cindy Crawford: Her supermodel status, classic beauty and gravity-defying voluminous hair helped define the decade. (Plus, without her we wouldn’t have Kaia Gerber!) In celebration of Vogue‘s 100th anniversary in 1992, the industry icon showed up to a party held at the New York Public Library in an eye-catching black bandage mini dress and elbow-length opera gloves with a fur trim.
The dress was of course by Hervé Léger, whose name is synonymous with figure-hugging bandage dresses. Crawford was at the forefront of the trend that would go on to become an all-out phenomenon in the early 2000s, worn by countless celebrities from Victoria Beckham to Kim Kardashian.
To transform the all-black ensemble into a full-on statement, Crawford paired the dress with dramatic fur-trimmed opera gloves, sheer black tights and classic pumps. And, of course, we have to talk about her signature bouncy hairstyle — a look that I’ve tried to recreate many, many times (haven’t we all?). She kept her accessories to a minimum, with simple black pumps and a single gold bracelet, letting her hairstyle shine through as the star of the show.
