You think of Yigal Azrouel and you think of leather. Specifically black leather, cut into oversized bombers, slim-fitting mini dresses, and rocker-girl trousers. There’s certainly plenty of it in the spring 2024 collection, but there’s also a conscious effort to add in relaxed pieces to soften all that edge. “I was trying to be very precise, but also very laid back,” Azrouel said in his newly opened Grand Street atelier and storefront.
A prime example is a suede short-sleeve black pajama shirt with a white trim that quite literally marries an edgy material with loungewear. The precision comes through in the gabardine trench coat with a mesh leather sleeve, and a similar mixed-media knit and patent bomber jacket. The colors are also exact, in that there’s a tight edit of black, gray, and white, with flashes of purple and aqua.
Azrouel offered a lot of knits and matching sets in this collection. The latter were particularly interesting in a Japanese denim with copper and silver hardware and a slightly cocoon-like silhouette. The eveningwear is, as always, body-conscious, black, or revealing—ready for a long night out. One of the coolest options is a U-neck white maxi with a super-high slit. With an urban Greek goddess vibe, it could be evening wear, it could be a beach cover-up, depending on the styling. Either way, it looks best with a leather jacket.
